Bluestone pathway project.

This project is a backyard pathway upgrade from existing gravel and rustic stair treads, to a finished bluestone surface.

Set in sand atop a compacted roadbase, these 1-1/2″ to 2″ bluestone pavers are a great way to turn any outdoor surface into a smooth, clean, usable space.

As an add-on to this original patio area that I built, the new pathway is the final connection from the front of this immaculate property to the back.

Front Entryway Completion!

The first steps to having a complete front landscape, this stonework lays the foundation for garden beds and a nice side entryway leading to a deck.

I’m looking forward to phase 2 in the spring, which will include another set of steps and a bluestone walkway!

Front entryway progress in Sooke!

Starting with a blank slate, this Sooke area entryway already has a great timber frame style which the new natural stone steps will compliment very well.

Compacting 3/4″ road-base and pouring a nice concrete pad upon which the stonework will sit to make this set of steps last.

I took a few minutes to mock up the L.E.D. accent lighting for my clients to view over the weekend as well, before I bond the bluestone down and set the brackets for the lights into mortar.

Some of the garden wall is starting to take shape as well:

Here’s the start of a secondary set of steps to create access from a deck through the new garden beds to the front of the property.

And more light layout!

Bonded down, these freshly grouted bluestone treads will have to set over the weekend before they can be used.

Looking forward to sharing the completed project with you this upcoming week!

Great Wall of Metchosin update #3!

Here’s a few photos of the past week’s progress!

The following picture shows the detail of this bluestone patio set in mortar.

The details of a finished wall with subtle lighting to add to the ambience of an evening stroll along the water:

This lower set of steps has come together nicely. It’s hard to imagine that there was literally nothing here before. Now it is the gateway to a private beach from this beautiful ocean front home. IMG_2913  IMG_2928 IMG_2929

Yet to be grouted, this patio is already in use as the weather has been absolutely unreal here to finish off July.

IMG_2931

It was my honour to let my client lay the final piece of this grand patio. He even ascribed his insignia and the year onto the back of it:

The final stretch has arrived as I start to cap the great wall, finish the details of the patio area, and complete a pathway to connect the new landscape to the rest of the property.

Great Wall of Metchosin update #2!

The beginning of the end of this upper terrace. It is coming together quite nicely!

This little entryway is yet to be grouted, and was designed to ease the transition between sun-room and patio area. It is anchored by two reclaimed brick planters that I built to match the existing brick on the exterior sun-room foundation.

Now comes the really fun part! Bluestone layout!!

And the details of the bench seating are really starting to give a glimpse of the finished product as well:

Even though there’s still a couple weeks left to go, the end is in sight, and believe me and my client Chris, the view is nice!

Great wall of Metchosin update!

This masonry project is getting closer to completion by the day here in Metchosin. As I work to finish the lower set of steps, it is really starting to take shape.

Here’s a few shots of recent progress:

And a couple close-up shots of some finishing details:

Metchosin Ocean view Project!

IMG_2053

This has been a special few months for me, as I have been working on a very large project on a spectacular ocean front property in Metchosin. It doesn’t get any better than working on a site such as this, and for a truly great client.

The scope of this project is to completely overhaul the ocean side of this home. As you will see in a before picture in the slideshow below, we are in the process of turning a grassy slope and lawn area into a completely deer free usable outdoor living space. It will include a massive retaining wall in our signature ‘tight fit’ style, as well as a patio area with bench seating upon which the final views will be incredible.

A glimpse of some of the detail of the wall surface:

A slideshow of progress so far:

A latest progress shot of the “great wall of Metchosin”, this wall will be both a barrier to create a deer free zone above, as well as retention for additional usable real estate above including a well manicured bocce playing area.

IMG_2038

Once this great wall is complete, the patio area will begin. It will be built to highlight this perfect spot to enjoy the hummingbirds, bald eagles, seals, otters, and breathtaking views.

Metchosin front entryway completion!

It has been challenging to deal with the weather, but luckily I was able to catch the right amount of sunshine to complete this front entryway today!

From grass to finished stonework, this staircase and pathway was designed to create a proper front entrance to this beautiful ocean front home.

Phase one of this grand project, it has been my honour to build this for a great man.

Metchosin front entryway update!

As I get closer to completion, the project really starts to come together in a special way. The finishing details are the most fun to work on and it’s always a pleasure to see my clients excitement build too.

Here’s the detail of the pathway that is all laid out and ready to be bonded and grouted to the concrete pad:

IMG_1667

The staircase is really the crown jewel of this project, and with the ‘cheeks’ completed and the slate laid out for the treads it’s becoming clear what the final product will look like.

IMG_1687

Next week I will unveil the finished product! Plus now that the stonework is complete there will be a handrail installed.

Until then,

Kevin with ROCKS.
